Ladder Accessories Introduction

According to the National Safety Council, falls were the leading cause of nonfatal injuries for all age groups except for 15-24 year olds. Thousands of people are injured or killed due to falls from ladders or scaffolding at work. Of all occupational injuries, falls are the second leading cause of death after highway accidents. The cost of compesation and down time amounts to billions every year.

Safety is a key factor

So when you use any attachment to a lader can you need be 100% sure the equipment you are using is not going impact on the safety of the ladder you are climbing.

Easy and Simple to Use

There are no safety standards for ladder accessories in most countries, so here at K&S Metals, we took the minimum standards for testing commercial ladders and adapted them for our accessories. We care about our users. Not only did we adapt these standards but we made them tougher as okay is not good enough.

The first step in the design of our ladder stand offs was to consider how we were going to connect to the ladder in a way that was quick and easy and light. So we designed a double box section aluminium profile, made special tooling to extrude this profile, which we then cut, bend, brace and weld to create a rigid and tough interface between the ladder and stand off. We also designed it so it would connect to the diffferent distances between standard, certified ladder rungs. This design is standard to all our wall and roof access ladder stand offs. We can powder coat this to your specific RAL colour requirement or bright dip to give you a long lasting natural aluminium finish.

The next thing we then had to consider was how to quickly, easily and safetly attach this connector to the ladder rungs without the need for nuts, bolts and other time consuming methods. We decided on using springs and hooks and allowed a two setting configuration for the differing distances between the rungs of ladders in the market. Whilst some people also use this system, we are the only manufacturers using two sets of hooks and springs. These are zinc plated and replacements are always available.

Then we thought that once this is attached to your extending ladder it will catch on any brickwork, weather boardings, concrete and any obstacle as you put your ladder up.
So we reinvented the wheel! We designed a square nylon hub with a four inch NBR rubber wheel which squeezes flat when the ladder is climbed up stopping the wheels from potentially turning when in use.

Then we realised that it would not be possible to deisgn just one ladder stand off that would be suitable for all types of use that these are put to. There was access to roofs without impacting on the rainwater gutters and potentially damaging the roof edges and how the user would easily be able to leave the ladder and gain access onto the roof.
So we designed three models, one for simple work and access to walls, another to be able acces roofs and still be able to be able to go over both 4" and 6" down pipes and the third for corners of buildings which incorporated a table area for tools and other bits and pieces. Finally we realised our design process was not finished yet as people need to get access to poles and trees, for example to replace light bulbs, service wind turbines, not to mention, rescuing the odd cat stranded in a tree!.
